I really don't feel like going to work today! Dogs have those days too! It is important to remember that these dogs are not machines! They are living, breathing creatures that have good days and bad days, just as we do. There are days that they do not feel like working. They have days that they do not perform as well as others. But I bet there have been times that you as a Officer didn't discover that the suspect had been drinking, or had something "right under your nose" and you just missed it! They are not a machine that works perfectly and without flaw. But let me quickly say that we give great attention to this so that they error on the side of caution, meaning that A miss is OK! It just build the confidence in the person that our K-9 can't find drugs. So what if he missed the drugs the guy or gal had. He'll carry it again and next time, to his suprise, he'll get caught. It's easy for Officers and people to look down on the Officer and his partner for not finding that guy or loosing the scent of a track. "Loosing the scent!" Maybe it just wasn't there to be found. How many times have we worked a burglary or crime scene and wished there was evidence. Well sometimes it just isn't there! You can't make it up. Or it's there but you just not seeing it. OH, my gosh, you mean humans make mistakes too! Everyone expects the dogs to perform miracles! It that was the case, we would perform the miracles that no one would do anything illegal. There not perfect.... they are just a heck of a lot better at doing something's than we are. I'll get off my soap box now... |
